Some media and social network pages shared footage and photos of forests and residential houses set on fire with the use of various combustible materials and substances in order to damage the ecosystem by polluting the ecological environment in Lachin, Khojaly and other districts of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General's Office immediately launched an investigation into the disseminated information, and necessary procedural actions have been taken to identify the perpetrators of these crimes.
The preliminary investigation established that these fires have been set on the territory of Lachin and Khojaly districts of the Republic of Azerbaijan. By localizing the fires in a short time, the spread of fire to the surrounding areas was prevented.
Upon on the facts, a criminal case was initiated by the Investigation Department under Articles 282.1 (provocation) and 186.2.2 (deliberate destruction or damage to someone’s property by arson or in any other generally dangerous way) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Urgent investigative actions are currently underway.
All legal measures will be taken to identify and bring to justice perpetrators of the environmental terrorism on the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan in gross violation of the requirements of the 1979 Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, by deliberately destroying forests with valuable and perennial trees, in order to cause extensive, long-term and severe damage to the environment.
