The Department of Criminalistics and Information Technology is an independent structural unit of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan. 

The main duties and functions of the Department: to perform the function of applying information and communication technologies in the activities of criminological services and the prosecution office during the preliminary investigation; take measures for the effective use of forensic techniques, tactics and methodology; to prepare scientifically grounded and approved methodological recommendations, reviews and other visual aids on investigation, methods of disclosure and tactics of various categories of crimes, studying the existing investigative experience and modern achievements of forensic expertise; take the necessary measures to collect knowledge about modern scientific achievements in the field of criminology and information technologies, disseminate it among prosecutors, and resolve questions about the prospects for their application in practice; register forensic equipment and other means with subordinate prosecutors for deployment, regularly update them and keep them in good condition for use, monitor their use when necessary; organize work with material evidence - control over their detection, fixation, seizure, storage, protection, movement and registration of material evidence at the scene; to conduct criminal investigations on behalf of the Prosecutor General's Office, participate in certain investigative actions as part of investigation teams; to make written suggestions and recommendations to ensure a complete, comprehensive and objective conduct of the preliminary investigation, etc.
