Former secretary of the party committee of the Sumgait Internal Affairs Department Khanjanov Huseynaga Agayar oglu testified that the first clashes were noted on February 27. And on the 28th, 12 people were already killed. Acting at that time the duties of the head of the Department of Internal Affairs, now retired police lieutenant colonel Khanlar Jafarov asked General Kraev, who was sent to the city to control the situation, to send military units stationed in Nasosnoye (present Tagiyev village) to Sumgait, but General Kraev refused this appeal , reproaching him with the fact that "What, you yourself cannot reason with a bunch of hooligans." For this reason, the number of those killed increased, and the next day, the killing of another 20 people was recorded. 26 of those killed were Armenians, and 6 were Azerbaijanis. Only after that, military units were introduced into the city, and a curfew was imposed. The servicemen of the military units brought into the city treated the Azerbaijanis roughly, arrested innocent people, and used physical violence against them. They were ordered to immediately release the detainees if they turned out to be Armenians. Therefore, the provocateurs, the Armenians, were not arrested. On February 28, the city prosecutor Ismet Gaibov opened a criminal case on the fact of the crimes committed, but two days later the investigative group of the USSR Prosecutor General's Office seconded from Moscow took the case into its proceedings, and law enforcement officers of Sumgait and Azerbaijan were generally suspended from investigative and operational activities. Under such circumstances, the unconditional recognition of the Armenians by the injured party did not encounter difficulties, and all the arrested Armenians were released, declaring their detention a mistake. Khanzhanov himself was subjected to biased interrogation by the senior investigator of the USSR KGB, Colonel Zubtsev, for seventeen days every day he forced him to write an explanatory note. When he told Zubtsev in his testimony that all these crimes were a provocation of the Armenians, he answered him that not only you are talking about this, many interrogated with the same opinion, and we are investigating it. After that, they came to the territory of the 3rd microdistrict, where the events took place. Here, the destruction of buildings took place systematically. Residents of the first and second floors of the buildings did not suffer, while Armenian families living on the upper floors were attacked, people were killed, apartments were robbed, property was destroyed. He showed all this to Zubtsov and explained to him the reason for what was happening, showing that if the Azerbaijanis really wanted to kill the Armenians, they would not pass by the apartments on the first floors and would kill the Armenians living there. But the murders were carried out according to a special plan and a special scheme. His own investigations showed that nothing happened to the Armenians who regularly paid membership dues to the nationalist organization "Krunk". Those Armenians who were either unable to pay membership fees to the nationalist organization "Krunk" or were unwilling to pay were killed or injured. Zubtsev understood the direction of his thoughts, as the investigator and forensic scientist revealed the mechanism and reasons for the crimes committed and on the way back told him: “I believe you and the facts confirm your words. But who are you hoping for? Heydar Aliyev? He's no more. " Several employees of the security structures of the city of Sumgait, interrogated in the case (R. Aliyev, T. Mamedov, F. Jamalov, etc.), testified that although they were actually removed from the investigation of the Sumgait events by investigative and operational means, they found that in In Sumgait, a sabotage group of 20-25 people acted, representing themselves as “Azerbaijanis expelled from Gafan”. Some Armenian victims also reported this. Although this information was brought to the attention of the investigative-operational group, for some unknown reason, their verification was not organized and everything remained unsuccessful. A similar testimony was given by Akhmedov Nofal, who worked as an interpreter in the investigation group of the USSR Prosecutor General's Office. He said that the members of the investigative-operational group among themselves repeatedly confirmed the fact of receiving signals about the aforementioned sabotage group, but did not take any steps to expose it. Shirin Mammadov, Nadir Mammadov, Ilham Yusifov, Eldaniz Huseynov, Malik Safarov, Miraziz Nasirov, Ilham Mammadov, Maharram Maharramov, Ilham Guliyev and other law enforcement officers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, included in the investigation team of the USSR Prosecutor General's Office, testified that they acted as part of of the investigative group of the USSR Prosecutor General's Office, which was investigating the events in the city of Sumgait, the head of the investigation group was the senior investigator for especially important cases of the USSR Prosecutor General's Office Galkin, the main investigative actions in the case were carried out by investigators invited from the USSR Prosecutor General's Office and various regions of the Russian Federation. As a result of the investigative actions carried out, they came to the conclusion that all these events were organized by the Armenians and about
Ibragimov Akif Gudrat oglu, who worked as part of the investigative group as an investigator, and now holds the position of senior prosecutor of the Office of the General Prosecutor's Office for supervision over the execution of laws in investigative, inquiry and operational-search activities in the Ministry of National Security and the Ministry of Emergency Situations, State Border Guard Service, Ibragimov Akif Gudrat oglu testified that at one of the weekly the head of the investigative group Galkin of meetings, he turned to him with such a question that about 135 apartments were plundered in Sumgait, but the number of those killed is several times less, from which we can conclude that many Armenians, in whose homes there were pogroms, knew in advance about the impending provocations or someone to notify them in advance and they left their homes. A. Ibragimov also testified that the issue raised by him interested the leadership and Galkin ordered to investigate this issue by investigative means, but his order remained unfulfilled. After that, A. Ibragimov came to the conclusion that a full, comprehensive and objective investigation was not carried out, the investigators conducted an investigation only in relation to the perpetrators of the crime, and no investigation was carried out against the organizers of the crime, despite the fact that there was enough material about the fact that the Sumgait events were planned in advance and implemented by certain forces. It also follows from the testimony of A. Ibragimov that about 2 - 3 days after the events, he saw that one of the employees of the Department of Criminalistics of the General Prosecutor's Office of the USSR (he does not remember his name, surname now) in the morgue of the Republican Hospital in Baku was filming disfigured corpses, in In connection with this, he remarked that it is impossible to video the corpses without drawing up any procedural documents. As he later became aware, later these pictures were used on one of the French TV channels. From the testimony of Ismailov Aslan Ziyaddin oglu, the prosecutor of the department of the Prosecutor's Office of the Azerbaijan SSR for supervision of the consideration of criminal cases in courts, who defended the state prosecution when considering a criminal case in the Supreme Court of the Azerbaijan SSR on charges of Eduard Grigoryan and 6 Azerbaijanis, it follows that the riots were planned in advance by the authorities intelligence services of the USSR at the highest level, literally no investigation was carried out to establish the organizers of the riots, the investigators were content only with bringing to justice the perpetrators - Azerbaijanis, he came to this conclusion after fully familiarizing himself with the investigation materials and on the basis of observations carried out in the trial. Aslan Ismailov testified that with the help of an investigator named Niyazi (Velikhanov), who was acting as part of the investigation team of the USSR Prosecutor General's Office, whom he accidentally met during the aforementioned trial, he met with an investigator of the State Security Committee (he does not remember his first and last name now, he was Russian by nationality), who admitted that he personally identified the two provocateurs in a “black cloak” and personally conveyed this information to the head of the investigation team Vladimir Galkin, however, later these materials were extracted from the criminal case. Aslan Ismailov also testified that with the help of two officers of the Supreme Court (he does not remember his name and surname now) he managed to detain a KGB officer by the name of "Saturyan" or "Saturov", who behaved very suspiciously during the trial, and handed him over to the then chairman Supreme Court to Huseyn Talibov. In the course of the current investigation, it was established that at that time two officers named "Saturyan" worked in the KGB of the Azerbaijan SSR. With the help of a photograph, Aslan Ismailov identified one of them - a KGB officer for the NKAO Saturyan Levon Akopovich. Further, Aslan Ismailov testified that, as a state prosecutor, he spoke at the end of the trial and demanded that the death penalty be imposed on Eduard Grigoryan and Vagif Huseynov, but unexpectedly for him, the presiding judge Mansur Ibaev sentenced them not to death, but to imprisonment. and he returned part of the criminal case for further investigation. A member of the Supreme Court of the Azerbaijan SSR Mansur Ibaev, who considered the criminal case on charges of E. Grigoryan and others, testified that during the consideration of the criminal case he found out that only the perpetrators were involved in the case, despite the presence of sufficient evidence that the organizers of these crimes were persons of Armenian nationality, the investigating authority did not take any steps to bring them to justice. Therefore, he returned the case to the investigating authority for further investigation on some episodes in order to establish and prosecute the organizers of the crime. Former employee of the KGB department of Sumgait city Hajialiyev Hajiali Yarali oglu testified that he had received information about Grigoryan Eduard Robertovich, nicknamed "Pasha", who was one of the organizers and executors of the events in Sumgait, and passed it on to P
The provocations committed by the Armenians in Sumgait was evident from the behavior of some of them during the events. Thus, the chief pediatrician of the city of Sumgait, Guliyeva Khalida Shirin kyzy, showed that immediately after the clashes in the city, an operational headquarters of medical workers was created in the city, ambulances delivered the wounded to hospitals, where they were provided with the necessary medical care. Nurse Amalia - an Armenian by nationality - approached her and said that all the killed were from Nagorno-Karabakh. Kh. Guliyeva also testified that on the eve of the events in Sumgait, one of the workers of the party committee of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region called his sister, Svetlana, who lives in Sumgait and works as a senior nurse in the polyclinic # 2, and told her that clashes would soon take place in the city , let him quickly leave the city. Several months after the Sumgait events during the All-Union Congress of Pediatricians, during a break, doctor Nelly Grigoryan, who had arrived as part of a delegation from the Armenian SSR, approached her, asked her to go to a secluded corner to talk, and during the conversation said that she was born from Nagorno-Karabakh, where the situation is getting more complicated every day, the tension is already at the limit, under various pretexts they arrest those who do not participate in the rallies, do not support the invented "genocide". Armenians are preparing special plans in Azerbaijan and are trying to implement them, even in Sumgait they are conducting propaganda in this direction. The relatives of the Armenians who died during the Sumgait events are told that they would be alive now if they were members of "Krunk". When she was in the hospital of the military garrison in the village named after G.Z. Taghiyev, in order to control the state of medical care provided to the Armenians stationed here, she was told that one seriously ill child, an Armenian by nationality, was under medical supervision. They wanted to kill him because of the hopelessness of his boy. Hearing this, she immediately went to the ward and saw there a familiar nurse of maternity hospital No. 1 named Silva, an Armenian by nationality, called her aside, where Silva told her that the Armenians tell the boy's mother that “he is not a lodger anyway, you, come on, agree, let him die, and we will take his body, take it to Sumgait and put it near the monument to Lenin, let everyone see that the Azerbaijanis did not even spare the child. " We immediately took the child under stricter control with the help of soldiers, and after providing the necessary medical attention, he recovered. The Armenians themselves admitted that if the Sumgait events had not taken place, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict could have developed in a completely different way, the rallies in Stepanakert (Khankendi) would have subsided and the plans of the Dashnaks might not have been realized. From the testimony of Melek Bayramova, who worked at that time as the second secretary of the party committee of the city of Sumgait, Melek Bayramova, who worked as the chairman of the Executive Committee of the city Council of People's Deputies, Mammadov Tavakkul Yagub oglu, and others, it follows that the work of the city leadership and local power structures was paralyzed by the instructions and orders of General Kraev, seconded from Moscow and others. The editor of the Sumgait newspaper, Gudrat Balakishi oglu, Melikov testified that after the well-known events took place in the city, they prepared a layout for the next issue of the Socialist Sumgait newspaper. However, the Moscow-appointed military commandant Krayev did not allow the newspaper to be published and stated that the events were not the work of “extremists”, as they were going to write, but “a group of hooligans,” supposedly the word “extremists” should not be used in the newspaper. The representative of Moscow even threatened to consider their issue in the bureau with subsequent recovery. Former instructor of the party committee of the city of Sumgait, Rahimov Seyfaddin Kerim oglu testified that during the period of the well-known events in Sumgait, they conducted explanatory work among the rally participants in order to calm them down. But at the same moment, several men and women appeared on the square, not like local residents, who carried on anti-Armenian propaganda and said that they were supposedly refugees from Armenia and brought with them a whole bus of corpses. He remembers that the same group also appeared on the square in a yellow PAZ bus. When the bus stopped in the middle of the square, screams were heard from there. And when the doors of the bus were opened, the legs of the corpses were supposedly visible. Young people and women getting off the bus shouted that Azerbaijanis were being killed in Armenia, that women's breasts were being cut, etc., and called for revenge for them. Some of the rally participants shouted that they were lying, they turned to him with the words “yes you are an Armenian” and began to incite people, and then turned to the people standing next to them: “they are of no use, I know where the Armenians live , let's follow me ”and led some of the people along. The psychiatrist of the city of Sumgait Tagiyev Mail Baghi oglu testified that at the beginning of February 1988, while on vacation in Sochi, he accidentally met
Faiga Zeynal kyzy, a nurse of the emergency medical aid brigade of the city of Sumgait, Alieva, testified that the Armenians, the residents of the apartments they used to leave on call, said that they had been beaten by the Armenians who had arrived from Armenia. She also testified that Israelian Sveta, her sister Rima, Vlasyan Irina, who worked with them, had told them long before the events that “you will still wait for the end, we will kill you all”. Huseynov Tofig Ismayil oglu, who worked as a doctor at the Medical and Sports Dispensary in Sumgait, said in his testimony that the head physician of the dispensary Avakyan Voldyan, where he worked, said that "while Heydar Aliyev is in Moscow, we will not be able to realize our plans." He himself personally witnessed that every day after work unknown people from outside the local gathered in Avakyan's office and discussed something for a long time. From the testimony of the nurse of the emergency medical aid team of the city of Sumgait, Alirzaeva Minai Musa kyzy, it follows that the Armenian nurse Raya (she does not remember her last name), who worked with them, told her that on the first day of the unrest, 3-4 people in black raincoats broke into her apartment violence against her family members. These people spoke Russian, but she understood from their accent that they were Armenians and therefore began to speak with them in Armenian and after talking with them she came to the conclusion that they were actually Armenians. She knelt down in front of them and begged for mercy, but they did not even pay attention to her, threw all the household utensils from the balcony and burned the apartment. The doctor of the emergency medical team of Sumgait city Guliyev Jafar Asad oglu testified during interrogation that in the first days of the riots he operated on one Armenian Aram Babayan, who was hospitalized with a knife wound in the abdomen, who told him that he was hit by an Armenian named Edik when he disembarked from the bus en route from Baku to Sumgait. A few days later, he recognized the man who had hit him, who was shown on TV, and made sure that it was Eduard Grigoryan. Guliyev Jafar also testified that a woman of Armenian ethnicity named Sonya, whom he performed a surgery on during the events, told him that she was beaten by an Armenian from Karabakh. In addition, he heard two men in a black raincoat with a black beard talking to each other in Armenian next to the podium in front of the building of the city party committee, workers of the hospital in which he worked, Ella Sargsyan, Lena and Elmira (they were all Armenian) collected money from other employees of medical institutions and sent somewhere. It was also established that Artash Grigoryan, who lived at the address: Sumgait city, 45th quarter, building 1/48, apt. 38 was prone to extremism. Thus, Nina Vasilievna Gasimova, who lived next door to the said person, testified at the time that she noticed that since the end of 1987, the attitude of Armenians towards Azerbaijanis and even towards Russians at the Sintezkauchuk plant, where she worked, has changed dramatically. They got together and discussed something among themselves in their own language, read newspapers in Armenian. The attitude of her neighbor Artash Grigoryan towards Azerbaijanis also changed, he did not begin to communicate with them, people of Armenian nationality, whom she had not seen before, began to visit them often. On the eve of the riots, Artash and other Armenians living in this building left the city. As for the persons who took an active part in the riots, she testified that they were young people of tall stature, athletic build, they spoke Russian and did not look like local residents. Natavan Anvar kyzy, interrogated as a witness by Bayramova, testified that Anatoli Davidyan, who worked with her at the pipe-rolling plant, was also her neighbor. From the end of 1987, the attitude of the latter to his fellow workers changed dramatically, he stopped communicating with Azerbaijanis, began to spend his time with Armenians who worked in other workshops. Several times she noticed various documents and letters in Armenian, receipts of money transfers in the latter's desk. In addition, she several times saw A. Davidyan with unknown persons of Armenian nationality, with whom he spoke in his own language; cars with Armenian plates often came to him. Several times he tried to talk about the fact that Nagorno-Karabakh is an Armenian territory, which was mistakenly transferred to Azerbaijan, but seeing the negative reaction of other workers, he stopped these attempts. Zeynalov Bakhtiyar Mahmudali oglu gave testimony of the same content in relation to his neighbor Kamo Tamrasyan. During the interrogation, Hamidova Leyla Amrulla kyzy testified that at the end of 1987, the attitude of her neighbor Artash Grigoryan towards Azerbaijanis also changed, he did not communicate with them, people of Armenian nationality, whom she had not seen before, began to visit them often. From the conversation between them, she understood that they were talking about Nagorno-Karabakh, because sometimes they switched to Russian. In addition, people often stopped in front of the block where Artash Grigoryan lived.
